The Astrofest places La Palma as an international reference point for astro-tourism

On Saturday, 21 September, several actions will take place at the San Antonio Volcano Visitor Centre to commemorate the autumnal equinox.

The Cabildo de La Palma, through the public company Sodepal, continues to develop the activities planned for Astrofest 2024, which consolidate the island as a world reference in astro-tourism. Thus, this coming Saturday, 21 September, activities will be held to celebrate the autumn equinox at the San Antonio Volcano Visitor Centre.

The CEO of Sodepal, Miriam Perestelo, highlights the commitment of the Institution of La Palma to the activities carried out in this Astrofest event, which allow it to attract a diverse public. In this case, this Saturday's activities allow "to intersperse different types of activities that can reach a specific public, such as those linked to prehistory or the use of telescopes, and to cover the widest possible range of ages in participation".

The activities to be carried out that day will begin at 18:00 hours with solar observation with telescopes and will continue with a talk given by the director of Astronorte, Miguel Calero, at 19:15 hours. At 19:30 there will be a tracking of the sun's shadow on a marker, given by the Sodepal technician, Antonio González.

The activity will continue with the lecture The sky of the Awara, given by Miguel Martín, from Iruere La Palma and this will be followed by the projection of 360º images of archaeological sites, by Antonio González. The activity will end with a night-time naked-eye and telescope viewing.

This free activity, aimed at all ages, offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the skies of the island, one of the best destinations in the world for astronomical observation.

Telescope meeting

In addition to this activity, the Astrofest La Palma calendar continues in September with a meeting of telescopes, which will take place on Friday, 27 September, in the Casa de la Cultura of Puntallana and its surroundings, from 20:00 to 23:00 hours.

This initiative, which will also be free and for all ages, will begin with a talk on the sky of La Palma and its protection, given by Ana García, CEO of LaPalmaStars - AstroLaPalma, and will continue with a presentation on what to observe in the sky, given by Sodepal's Astrotourism technician, Antonio González.

The event will culminate with an astronomical observation session where participants can bring their own telescope or use those provided by the organisation.
