The Cabildo highlights the value of the La Palma goat with a photographic exhibition in the Avenida Marítima in Santa Cruz de La Palma.

The exhibition is part of the Fotonature project and the photographs were taken by the Palmero photographer Saúl Santos.

The Cabildo de La Palma, through the public company Sodepal and in close collaboration with the Asociación de Criadores de Cabras de Raza Palmera, is organising a photographic exhibition that highlights the historical and economic contribution of the island's livestock farmers to the island's economy. It can be visited on Avenida Marítima in Santa Cruz de La Palma, near the old Parador de Turismo.

The presentation of the exhibition was attended by the CEO of Sodepal, Miriam Perestelo; the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Alberto de Paz; the association's technician, Beatriz Hernández, and the photographer Saúl Santos.

Miriam Perestelo explained that the exhibition consists of 20 large photographs, taken by Saúl Santos, with texts by the poet and veterinary surgeon María Sánchez.

He also announced that the exhibition will be on display in six municipalities of La Palma, for six days in each of them. In Santa Cruz de La Palma it will be on display until the 3rd of November, and then it will be exhibited in Fuencaliente, on the occasion of the Saborea Island Gastronomy Fair.

The exhibition is part of the Fotonature project, financed by the Economic Promotion Department of the Cabildo de La Palma, which takes into account the fact that the Palmera goat has been one of the pillars of the island's economy for centuries. It is currently officially recognised as a Special Protection Autochthonous Breed, is mainly located on La Palma and has a very traditional breeding system of grazing.

For his part, Alberto de Paz highlighted the work done by Saúl Santos for the show and the breeders' association's defence of the breed. He also stressed the importance of the show, which will allow, in the future, to bring the Palmera goat breed closer to other groups such as schools or neighbourhood associations.

Cabra Palmera.

This is one of the breeds worldwide with the greatest potential for the production of artisan cheeses. Given the exceptional quality of its milk, with the best protein percentage known among dairy goat breeds, and a very good level of fat, it could be considered the ideal animal for any farmer interested in semi-extensive farming, using local forage resources in non-agricultural areas, with production focused on making cheese or any other dairy product to satisfy the demand for local consumption of top quality products.

With a clear dairy orientation, it is a goat that is very well adapted to its natural environment and to the climatic and orographic conditions of its surroundings, which makes it a very hardy and hardy breed.

The breeding and production of the Palmera goat is carried out under a very traditional system, in medium-sized farms where the milk is processed in a traditional way in small cheese dairies.
