SODEPAL and the Tourism Department of the Cabildo de La Palma, through the Astrotourism Dissemination and Promotion programme, will carry out a series of activities to celebrate the Summer Solstice, with the collaboration of the Irene La Palma Association, the Town Councils of Fuencaliente and El Paso and the specialised company AstroNorte.
All ancient civilisations had the need to mark the time, to know when the rains came, the longest and hottest days, the reproduction of animals, and so on. And to do so, they not only observed the stars, but were also able to interpret the constant and annual movement of the sun and the moon. An example of this can be found in the ancient inhabitants of La Palma and their archaeological sites of a cultural or religious nature, which acted as Solstice and Equinox markers, created more than 1,500 years ago.
- Location: San Antonio Volcano Visitor Centre.
- 20:00 h.: Talk "The cult of the sun among the ancient Canarians", by Miguel A. Martín, prehistorian and president of the Iruene La Palma Association.
- 20:45 h.: Monitoring of the evolution of the shadow from the astronomical marker and educational workshops. By Antonio González, SODEPAL technician.
