Yesterday's shortest race, which returned to its original route, was a spectacle for the fans.
Daniel Osanz and Onditz Iturbe had the honour of opening the gallery of champions of the last day of the Transvulcania adidas Terrex, both beating the race record. The runner from Aragon and the runner from the Basque Country won the Half Marathon of the competition on the Isla Bonita in a distance that always offers a spectacle for the fans.
The race returned to its original route starting from the Faro de Fuencaliente lighthouse to enter volcanic terrain in an extremely tough climb of almost 20 kilometres and then descending, under the protection of the pine forest, towards the finish line at the Refugio de El Pilar.
The start of the race and the strategies of the riders were eagerly awaited, especially after Ryunosuke Omi's victory in Thursday's Vertical Climb.
The favourites demonstrated their level from the start in an explosive race that gave no time to look behind. Finally at the finish line Daniel Osanz (2h.12:35) came in first, second was Fabián Venero (2h.13:32) and third finished the athlete from Gomero Álvaro Escuela (2h.18:36).
Among the girls, the script was similar, but the winner at the Refugio de El Pilar was Onditz Iturbe (2h.38:56) ahead of Camilla Magliano (2h.43:52), while the third place went to the palm tree runner Moana Lilly Kehres (2h.46:29).
At the end of the race, the president of the Cabildo Insular de La Palma, Sergio Rodríguez, emphasised that they were "very happy to see the response of the runners, who sold out all the places in this Half Marathon and also to have the original route back, giving all the participants the opportunity to live the unique experience of starting from the Faro de Fuencaliente lighthouse, running these 24 kilometres through unique natural landscapes and finishing in our emblematic Refugio de El Pilar with this atmosphere that has once again been generated among the people of La Palma, who have recovered one of their reasons for being with this race".
