C.V. El Roque

The Roque de los Muchachos Visitor Centre is set in a unique landscape at an altitude of 2,426 metres, which guarantees the best conditions for astronomical observation, housing one of the most important astrophysics observatories in the world.

The main objective of the visitor centre is to bring the importance of astronomy to the island of La Palma and to promote the natural and cultural heritage of the highest point on the island of La Palma.

This project was born from the collaboration of the Cabildo de la Palma, the Town Council of Villa de Garafía and the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias "I.A.C." (Canary Islands Astrophysics Institute) through a management agreement for this space.

The Visitor Centre is divided into several rooms:

  • Welcome Room:where we find the reception, the auditorium, the shop and the large interactive table with "tactile menus", which takes us into the bowels of the telescopes of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory.
  • Room 1 "The Canary Islands, a window to the Universe":where we will discover the reasons why the Canary Islands have been strategically chosen to house the most important telescopes in the world.
  • Room 2 "Exploring the Universe":at this point we enter the depths of the cosmos, exploring every corner of science and our Universe.
  • Room 3 "Back to Earth":In this room we return to the municipality of Villa de Garafía, which is the municipality of La Palma that hosts the Visitor Centre. We will learn about its traditions, its way of life and its natural and cultural heritage.
