Programme for the Promotion of Astrotourism on La Palma

The "ASTROTOURISM PROMOTION PROGRAMME OF THE ISLE OF LA PALMA - PALP" belongs to the public company SODEPAL, under a management and economic contribution entrusted by the Tourism Department of the Cabildo Insular de la Palma.

This proposal, which was born in 2020, has as its main task to promote astronomical dissemination and astro-tourism on the island of La Palma.

The sky over La Palma is an international benchmark for astrophysics. The island territory has one of the most important observatories in the Northern Hemisphere at its peak, the Roque de los Muchachos, a reality that is also linked to the approval by the Spanish Government of the Sky Protection Act in 1988, promoted by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) and in which the Isla Bonita played a leading role.

Supporting the promotion of astronomy in La Palma has become a fundamental action not only to better understand this science, but also to defend it as an activity with repercussions on the island's economy. This is what we have called Astrotourism.

There is a clear need to support both public institutions and private companies in the consolidation of La Palma as an attractive destination from the point of view of astronomy, by supporting actions to attract visitors, but without forgetting the need to raise the awareness of residents about the importance of our sky. Therefore, this project has a twofold focus: support for promotion abroad and raising awareness of astro-tourism among the residents themselves, two aspects that we believe should go hand in hand.

What outreach activities do we do?

All kinds of activities are carried out, from classic night-time observation workshops, to solar observations, didactic talks, with meteorite displays, training in astrophotography, visits to the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory, etc. Activities adapted to all kinds of audiences.

We are currently focusing on promoting the travelling planetarium of the Youth Department of the Cabildo de La Palma among schools.
