Astrophysicist Jocelyn Bell will receive her star on the Paseo de las Estrellas de la Ciencia during the AstroFest La Palma.

The Irish scientist will receive this recognition at a ceremony to be held this Thursday at the Casa Principal de Salazar.

The Cabildo de La Palma continues to consolidate AstroFest La Palma 2024 as a benchmark in the promotion of astronomy and astro-tourism, with a week full of events aimed at both the local public and visitors. Since its presentation in June, this festival has offered a wide range of activities, including talks, workshops, astronomical observations, monologues and musical performances, all with the same objective: to bring the fascinating world of astronomy to all audiences and highlight the potential of La Palma as a first class astro-tourism destination.

President Sergio Rodríguez highlighted the importance of this event for the island and explains that "AstroFest La Palma not only highlights the privileged sky we have, but also boosts the economic development of the island through astro-tourism, a sector that continues to grow. We are very proud that La Palma is internationally recognised for the quality of its sky and its commitment to its preservation".

Among the most outstanding events of this week, from 22 to 24 October, will be the visit of Jocelyn Bell, Doctor in Astrophysics and discoverer of the first pulsar, also recognised for her work in defence of equality in science. On the 24th, at 18:00, a series of public talks will be held and she will be presented with a replica of the star that will bear her name in the Paseo de las Estrellas de la Ciencia.

The programme will continue on Friday 25 October, at 20:00, with the show 'Monologues among the Stars', by the comedian Petite Lorena and the astrophysicist Irene Puerto, who will combine humour and science to offer an entertaining and educational evening.

To close the week, on Saturday 26 October, the municipality of El Paso will turn off its lights in the 'Turn off the light, turn on the stars' event, which will include live music and a sky observation, creating a unique experience under one of the cleanest skies in the world.

Sergio Rodríguez stressed that "AstroFest allows us to show the world the exceptional conditions that La Palma offers for astronomical observation. This type of initiative not only encourages interest in science, but also strengthens our image as a unique destination for star tourism".
