La Palma will host the 7th edition of the International Chess Tournament 'Playing with the Stars' in August.

The competition will take place from 2 to 9 August in the Roberto Estrello sports hall in Santa Cruz de La Palma.

The Cabildo de La Palma, from the Department of Sports and the public company Sodepal, and the Insular Chess Centre, with the support of the Canarian Chess Federation and the City Council of Santa Cruz de La Palma, have presented this Friday what will be the seventh edition of the International Chess Tournament Playing with the Stars, which will take place in the capital of La Palma in the first week of August.

The CEO of Sodepal, Miriam Perestelo, affirms that the holding of this tournament "places the island on the international chess scene". "The Cabildo de La Palma, through the public company, collaborates in an event that we intend to make grow and strengthen, generating great opportunities for our island around the sport of chess.

For his part, the Councillor for Sports, Yurguen Hernández, is proud of the progress that this competition is making, "causing chess in La Palma to gain importance". He also wanted to highlight the work behind the organisation of such an event.

The Councillor for Sports of the Santa Cruz de La Palma Town Hall, Carlos Pérez, has pointed out the importance of this tournament in the municipality of Santa Cruz de La Palma, also thanking the Cabildo de La Palma for its support. "The Town Hall of Santa Cruz de La Palma will continue to support this event, which allows us to continue improving the level of the sportsmen and women who practice this sport on the island".

The President of the Centro Insular de Ajedrez, José Carlos Martín, thanks the institutions that collaborate to make this tournament take place once again this year, as well as putting chess on a par with any other sport. "We are committed to improving, with important new features and making this tournament a celebration of sport, also with the aim of continuing to train masters on the island," adds the president.

In total more than 100 participants will take part in the International Tournament "Playing with the Stars", which will take place in the Roberto Estrello Pavilion in Santa Cruz de La Palma. The competition will last one week, from 2 to 9 August.
