Astrofest turns off all the lights in El Paso to enjoy the starry sky

This meeting, organised by the Cabildo de La Palma through Sodepal, was attended by more than 250 people.

The municipality of El Paso experienced a unique night last Saturday, when a new edition of 'Turn off the Light and Light the Stars' took place, an activity framed in the Astrofest 2024 programme that has allowed to turn off all public lights in the municipality and to enjoy the clean sky.

More than 250 people took part in the activities programmed by the Cabildo of La Palma, through Sodepal, on that day, which sought to raise awareness about light pollution and the need to protect dark skies, supported by the fact that La Palma, recognised as a Starlight Reserve and one of the best astro-tourism destinations in the world, offers an exceptionally clean sky that allows thousands of stars to be seen with the naked eye.

The event began with the show 'Music by the Stars', performed by the municipal bands of Los Llanos de Aridane and El Paso, and the presentation of the video clip 'Ritual de Estrellas' by the group Buenavá.

Subsequently, all the public lights in the municipality were turned off, which allowed the starry sky to be observed, and made countless curious people come to the Plaza Francisca de Gazmira, where several astro-tourism companies were located with their telescopes.

This activity was financed by Turismo del Cabildo Insular de La Palma, under the coordination of Sodepal, and with the collaboration of the Ayuntamiento de El Paso. The municipal bands of Los Llanos de Aridane and El Paso and the Buenavá group also collaborated.
